European Para-Cup: Off to a cracking start!

Image
Nine British athletes have got off to a cracking start at the second stage of the world ranking European Para-Archery Cup in Nove Mesto. Paralympic champion Jess Stretton is the top seed in three events: compound women’s individual, compound mixed team with fellow Rio medallist John Stubbs and the compound team category with Victoria Rumary and another Rio medallist, Jodie Grinham. Victoria is also the women’s W1 top seed. That mean’s both Jess and Jodie, who is ranked eighth, are in the last 16 of the individual category and could face each other in the quarter finals. Jess will have to beat either Choi Na Mi of Korea or Iran’s Farzaneh Asgari while Jodie will face another Iranian, Razieh Shir Mohammadi, or Karin Ersson Josefsson of Sweden. Third seed John will face either Wu Tung Sang of China or Kazakhstan’s Alexandr Medvedev for a place in the last 16. Jamie Harris, ranked 15th, defeated Jamal Albedwawi of the United Arab Emirates 143-125 to reach the last 32. He now take...

Stay safe in the sun

Image
Enjoying the sunshine? It’s wonderful and conditions could not be better for our outdoor season. But can we remember, please, to stay safe in the sun? It’s been one of the longest consistently sunny periods for years and it looks set to continue, so if you are heading to a tournament – it’s time to prepare. Adopt the old Slip, Slop, Slap advice. Make sure you are wearing appropriate gear – many summer tops now come with sun protection built in, so slip one on. Slop on 30-plus sunscreen that offers both UVA and UVB protection and slap on a wide-brimmed hat. Don’t forget sunnies with UV protection. And adopt one of the internationals’ top tips: use an umbrella when walking to the target. Just remember to take it down and put it on the ground before you score and collect your arrows and make sure they are safely tucked in your quiver before you put it up again. The NHS advises staying out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, so if you are not shooting, seek shade. If you are going t...

Nove Mesto: Two more golds!

Image
Two golds brought Great Britain’s medal haul at the world ranking European Para-Archery Cup in Nove Mesto to five, taking us to second place in the medals table. Jessica Stretton was on red-hot form as she battled for the women’s compound title. She seized top spot on the compound women’s ranking board and swept past Korea’s Choi Na Mi 145-133, teammate Jodie Grinham 144-139 and Nur Syahidah Alim of Singapore 142-138 to set up a gold medal clash with Stepanida Artakhinova of Russia. There was only one point between the equally determined competitors – but Jessica edged it and is now second to the Russian in the rankings, having only shot one of the two stages. Jodie Grinham is third. Victoria Rumary tops the W1 rankings after a thrilling and dramatic gold medal-winning performance. The top seed beat Anna Ilina of Russia 137-125 to set up a title decider with Kim Ok Geum of Korea. It was neck and neck all the way and the athletes finished their final end tied on 129. That forced...

JNOC: England brings it home!

What a stunning weekend. The sun shone and the atmosphere was electric as one England team took us to the semi-finals of the world cup – and another romped to victory in the Home Nations competition at the Junior National Outdoor Championships. National Tour: Adam does the double

Image
Compounder Adam Ravenscroft is celebrating a cracking weekend after winning both stages four and five of the National Tour at Kingston University. There was plenty of drama as stage three winner James Mason came up against Adam – last year’s champion – as the on-form athletes went head to head in the stage four final. Second seed Adam had a bye into the last 32 where he saw off Jamie Harris 144-136, then Simon Scott 147-143, Michael Kells 145-136 and Stuart Taylor by a single point in the semis. James qualified in eighth spot and beat Martin Walton 149-110, Carlos Bolou 149-138, David Martel 146-144, top seed Kai Thomas-Prause 145-143 and Matthew Dale 147-139. The decider was on a knife-edge all the way but finally ended in a tie, with each archer scoring 146 points. That meant a shoot-off. James shot a nine – but Adam clinched it with a 10. Stuart beat Matthew to bronze. Stage four compound women’s gold went to Isabelle Carpenter who beat 2017 champion Sarah Prieels by a s...
